Sunshine Sanctuary began as just a sanctuary called Kids Coral.  Rescuing animals that had been abandoned and abused, as well as orphaned babies and elderly horses.  The sanctuary used the rescued animals for therapy for children and head of the sanctuary Christina Nooner was amazed at the bond between the children and the horse's.  Along the way other pet's were rescued, many of which visiting children brought to the sanctuary to be helped.  When the sanctuary got an orphaned baby from the Wild horse sanctuary everything changed!  Sunshine was brought to us at only 5 days old.  She was given no chance of survival because of dehydration and pneumonia . Sunshine was the first foal born from the Heritage Herd after they were relocated from Santa Cruz Island. The love of visiting children and the determination of the Sanctuary leader's gave Sunshine the strength to survive.  Sunshine became the name~sake of the sanctuary is now getting ready to turn eleven.  While we still do many rescues, our main rescues are the horses from the Santa Cruz Island as we try to save this rare breed of horses to be enjoyed by many generations to come.  Pictured on this page are rescues both that still live at the sanctuary and many who have been adopted out to loving homes.
